The Skovgaard Museum is Viborg's art museum, where you can experience Danish Golden Age art and modern contemporary art, particularly by painter and multi-artist Joakim Skovgaard and his family. Here you step into an artist's home marked by family drama, church art and groundbreaking visions - right in the heart of Viborg.
The Skovgaard Museum is centrally located in Viborg and showcases both classical and modern art. The museum is named after the Skovgaard family, who were highly influential in Danish art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The focus is particularly on Joakim Skovgaard, who is known for his monumental works, such as the decoration of Viborg Cathedral.
The museum's permanent collection tells the story of the Skovgaard family as artists, parents, spouses and social commentators. The narrative encompasses upheaval, idealism and passion, and places the family's art in the context of both contemporary and modern trends.
In addition to the permanent collection, the Skovgaard Museum hosts several special exhibitions each year, which bring contemporary art and artists into dialogue with the museum's historical roots. Here you can experience contemporary artists who explore themes ranging from spirituality and existence to materiality and nature.
The museum's exhibitions are aimed at children, young people and adults alike, and there are often workshops, lectures and guided tours that delve deeper into the art and its many layers.
The museum is housed in a beautiful, historic building from 1728 - the former town hall - located right next to Viborg Cathedral. Here you will have a sensory experience where architecture, history and art come together in perfect harmony. The nearby Viborg Cathedral, which Joakim Skovgaard decorated in the years 1895-1906, makes the visit a complete experience.
The museum is closed every Monday (except Easter Monday and Whit Monday) as well as 23–26 and 31 December and 1 January.
